Immersive University Experiences & Partnerships

Giving every mentee the opportunity to visit a college campus is integral to Refuge’s mentorship process. Each chapter independently organizes several events throughout the year where our mentees can interact with their mentors in-person and connect with the wider Refuge community.

Working with our generous community partners, Refuge hosts immersive events enabling mentees to explore life in college and discover the many resources available for language learning, financial aid, and career development.

Campus Scavenger Hunt

Mentors and mentees split into teams to solve clues spread around campus. Students explored the university's many green spaces, libraries, and facilities.

Annual Immersion Experience

Each year, mentees are invited to campus for an all-day immersive experience of university life. Activities from past events include: tours of the Ohio State football stadium, tutorials in applied clinical skills, and meet-and-greets with professors from various academic disciplines. At no cost to them, students also have the opportunity to eat at campus dining halls and sit in on college lectures. The Immersion Experience is a celebration of the mentees’ achievements from the previous academic year and brings together the entire Refuge community.

TEDx Competition

The Ohio State chapter of Refuge partners with TEDxOhioStateUniversity each year to host a TEDx competition for mentees. Mentees are individually paired with coaches to write, practice, and deliver their original TEDx talks at an event hosted on-campus with the entire Refuge community. As part of the competition, Refuge awards cash prizes to those with the best TEDx talks. This unique opportunity enables mentees to develop their public speaking skills in English and explore the stories they have to tell the world.
